Coke Oven Gas to Synthetic Natural Gas in Jin Demonstration

The Shanxi Economic and Information Commission revealed yesterday that the Southwest Sci-Tech Research and Design Institute has independently developed patented technologies and the first domestic 50,000 m3/h industrial gas (SNG) industrial demonstration unit for coke oven gas will be completed and put into operation in Shanxi at the end of this year. In addition, project feasibility studies for more than 20 companies have also been completed. This will promote China's comprehensive utilization of resources and energy diversification, ease the shortage of China's natural gas energy, reduce chemical emissions and greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Ma Yunxia, ​​Director of Energy Division of Shanxi Economic and Information Commission, Shanxi Guoxin Loujun Energy Co., Ltd. and Southwestern Institute of Science and Technology recently signed a cooperation agreement for coke oven gas SNG project. The coke oven gas produced from coking plant coking is used as raw material. SNG system, with a scale of 50,000 Nm3/h, is expected to be completed and put into production by the end of this year. The project construction investment is only 30% to 40% of the same scale of coal-based natural gas. After the project is completed, it can annually produce 200 million cubic meters of SNG and directly enter the natural gas pipeline network of Shanxi Guoxin Energy to achieve zero emission of coke oven gas. The discharge of carbon dioxide is 338,000 tons, sulfur dioxide is 1210 tons, and total dust is 16 tons. The entire investment can be recovered in three years, which will play an exemplary role in the comprehensive development and utilization of coke oven gas in the country.

According to experts, the SNG patented technology for coke oven gas used in the Southwestern Institute is a key project of the national “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” technology support plan. Earlier this year, it was approved by experts organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The technical achievements mainly include three major innovations: First, the catalyst has three functions for completing methanation, deoxygenation, and multi-carbon hydrocarbon conversion; the second is the methanation process including multi-stage series, gas circulation, and steam recovery, and the removal of methanation is reasonable. The reaction heat realizes the full and reasonable utilization of thermal energy. The third is the integrated innovation of coke oven gas purification, methanation, and pressure swing adsorption gas separation technology. At the same time, SNG can also obtain 99.99% pure hydrogen. At present, Southwest Academy has signed a transfer contract for this technology with two Shanxi enterprises, and completed a feasibility study report for more than 20 companies.

It is understood that there are various methods for the application of coke oven gas, such as direct combustion, power generation, urea production, methanol production, natural gas, steel making and so on. However, through technical and economic analysis, SNG from coke oven gas has the best economic benefits. A coke oven gas produced by a coke oven with a 1 million-ton/year coking unit will produce SNG after methanation to produce 100 million standard cubic meters of compressed natural gas per year. National coking companies emit about 20 billion cubic meters of coke oven gas every year, and their calorific value exceeds the total calorific value of natural gas for the first phase of the West-East Gas Transmission Project.
