Cummins' first four QSK95 engines have been delivered
Recently, at the 2016 Hamburg International Maritime Exhibition (SMM), Cummins announced that it has recently delivered the first four QSK95 engines for the marine sector, and the shipowner is the company's long-term customer, Seacor Marine Holdings. To a 57-meter-long twin-body transport vessel designed by Incat Crowther.
Two personnel transport vessels will be built this time. Each will be equipped with four QSK95 marine engines. The rated power is 4,000 hp (2,983 kW) / 1700 rpm. The engine will also be equipped with two Disc MGX-62500SC-H marine gearboxes. It drives four Hamilton HT-810 waterjets with a maximum speed of 40 knots.
Cummins will also provide auxiliary power for each ship – two QSM11 generator sets per ship, a single power of 290kWe; and a fully enclosed QSM11-driven deck engine block with a power of 270kWe.
It is reported that the two new ships are named "Puma" and "Panther", which will be built by the Spanish Astilleros Armon Burela shipyard. The first ship is expected to be put into service in April 2017. The engine of the second ship will be delivered in December this year. The new ship was delivered in July 2017.
Compared to the medium speed machine that provides the same power output, the QSK95 marine engine has the advantages of smaller size, lighter weight and better transient response while improving service levels. The QSK95 engine meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization Tier II regulations and operates from 3200 hp to 4200 hp (2386-3132 kW), producing 95 liter displacement in a 78 liter vessel. The nested cylinder and a 60 degree V engine have a shorter, narrower engine block than other comparable displacement engines. In addition, the QSK95 engine weighs only 13,000 kg (28660 lb), which is 25% to 70% lighter than a medium-speed machine with the same output.
With a unique turbocharger and a dry exhaust system, the QSK95 engine provides faster transient response. With one booster for every four cylinders, the QSK95 engine can utilize a smaller booster.
The dry supercharger housing and dry exhaust manifold will maximize the energy supplied to the supercharger, allowing it to accelerate faster and allow the engine to respond quickly.
