UT School of Nuclear Engineering invented a radiation sensor that can save lives

[ Instrument network instrument research and development ] A recently graduated PhD from Dickel College of Engineering has invented a radiation detector design that can be used to stop the smuggling of nuclear materials or to help emergency responders find out from dirty bombs radiation.
Micah Folsom, who studies nuclear engineering, adopted the concept built for gamma-ray detection and used it in neutron scattering imaging technology.

Folsom's camera design is the first operational compact neutron scattering camera, similar to a fast neutron, equivalent to the advanced Compton telescope used in gamma-ray astronomy.
Similar cameras that image neutron sources (such as p) are bulky and bulky because neutrons must interact at least twice (usually in two well-spaced planes), and the energy and location of neutron scattering must be known.
The camera designed by Folsom takes photos of radiation and fast neutrons and then shows where these fast neutrons come from. The design is very compact enough for someone to carry it with them.
The camera uses a so-called coded aperture for imaging, which consists of a very special shadow pattern and a light source. The light source will cast shadows directly on the pattern, similar to the way light is cast directly from the fingertips.
There is a very special pattern on the camera system. Then record the shot and use the unfolding algorithm to determine where the light came from.
"Due to the great potential for excellent imaging efficiency, this design has the potential to be very fast, enabling rapid imaging of neutron sources," said Jason Hayward, deputy director of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Folsom thesis consultant.
