Google deploys first prototype of Chrysler driverless mini-vehicle was disclosed

Beijing time on October 11 news, according to electrek website reports, Google is working with Fiat Chrysler to create a driverless team. The team will consist of Chrysler's new plug-in hybrid minicar Pacifica. Google hopes to advance its own driverless car strategy through this move.

At present, the driverless fleet of the Tesla Autopilot system has reached 357 million kilometers in one year. Google’s unmanned team’s road test has lasted seven years and has a mileage of 2 million miles (321 million kilometers). Many companies are accelerating the development of semi-automatic and fully-automated driving vehicles.

Google’s new driverless fleet will consist of 100 Pacifica minicars. These vehicles will be equipped with a new sensor system for testing Google’s unmanned systems. Previously, Google’s self-driving fleet had only 24 Lexus Rx450h SUVs and 34 self-designed prototypes, which were distributed in four cities: Mountain View, Cochrane, Phoenix, and Austin.

The first batch of six Pacifica minicars have been delivered to Google’s factory in Mountain View, California. Two of them have already installed sensors and the other four have unmanned systems.

Google is trying to make its own driverless system more "commercialized." Compared with the sensors of the Lexus Rx450h SUV prototype vehicle, the size of the sensor installed on the roof will be reduced, and the corresponding lidar sensor will not extend beyond the vehicle.

The sensors mounted on the roof are closer to the roof, which has multiple functions of radar antennas, laser sensors and cameras.

Fiat-Chrysler said that these Pacifica mini-vehicles can be equipped with plug-in hybrids and choose to use a battery pack with a capacity of 16 kWh, which has a cruising range of 30 miles (48 kilometers) under all-electric driving conditions.

With the dramatic increase in the number of test cars, Google will conduct more road test work and eventually allow its own unmanned system to be commercialized. Previously, some former Google employees had accused accusations that driverless cars were making slow progress in the direction of technology research and development.
