Shell launches a special epoxy resin for cars to reduce vehicle weight

Recently, Shell International Chemicals of the UK announced the launch of a new type of epoxy resin specifically for light weight composite materials. It has been used in the automotive industry to significantly reduce the weight of vehicles and has achieved good results. The company introduced this new type of epoxy resin, the brand name Epikote 6104/6906, can be used in the hot-press molding process, made of multi-layer epoxy glass steel products, its glass fiber content of up to about 65%.

This epoxy resin has a very low viscosity (3 pa·s) at a molding temperature of 80°C, but at a room temperature (20°C), its viscosity is high and can reach 50,000 pa·s. After actual use, a 20-mm-thick composite village product can be formed and formed in only 9 minutes. Heating the prepreg to the molding temperature takes about 6 minutes.

It is reported that this light automotive composite material has now been successfully applied to large-scale cars produced by Shell Automotive of the Netherlands. It is also used in Nissan-type vehicles and other trucks and trucks.

It is reported that the company has also developed an epoxy resin series for the structural reaction injection molding (SRIM) process, which is known as Epikote 6008/6511. This resin has a very low viscosity at 80°C, only 0.06 pa.s. At 120°C molding temperature, it can be made into a glass steel product in only 3 minutes.

The company also applied this composite epoxy resin product to a structural part of an underground construction project at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. It can replace 27 original metal components with only 2 products, and can reduce the weight by 48%. , reduce product costs by 25%.
