Retired Veteran Performs a Promise for Sacrificing Comrades for 27 Years

Veteran soldier Zhou Yuenan adheres to a commitment to sacrifice his comradely friend for 27 years

On the morning of March 14th, Zhou Yuenan, a police officer of Wenzhou Ouhai Public Security Substation, put the two big bags of food bought the day before on the train, and drove again to Lebaeng Village, Shuangchao Township, Lucheng District, which was more than 40 kilometers away. There are many corners on the mountain road, Zhou Yuenan is very familiar and straight up to the top of more than 500 meters high.

On this mountain road, Zhou Yuenan spent 27 years to visit only the parents of the deceased comrade Chen Yunsheng.

Zhou Yuenan is 54 years old this year. At the age of 26, he participated in a counterattack against Yue self defense. The traces of years have already climbed up to the forehead, and the old man is now a grandfather. However, he promised to promise that he had sacrificed his comradely friends for decades to accomplish filial piety. The hot heart has not changed.

Better than my relatives

Since Chen Zhouxing, the father of his comrade Chen Yunsheng, died in 2008, only Chen Mu, a mother of Chen Shansheng, lives on the top of the mountain.

The car stopped at the top of the hill. The reporter looked around and saw a solitary old house. There were no other cottages around. Zhou Yuenan said that the other villagers have all moved down the hill, leaving Chen Mu and his wife living in the mountains.

“Mom, help toilets today.” Zhou Yuenan has long been accustomed to call 80-year-old Chen mother “mother”. Once at the door, Zhou Yuenan used to open the refrigerator, put the fresh meat, vegetables, salted fish, and shrimp that he had bought, and put rice, soy sauce, and MSG in the kitchen. Sending necessities of life every month, Zhou Yuenan knew what was missing at home.

Later, Zhou Yuenan got into the bathroom. A few minutes later, he said easily to Chen mother: "Mom, the toilet is fixed."

27 years of persistence

The fate of Zhou Yuenan and Chen Jia dates back to 1985.

In early 1985, Zhou Yuenan, the platoon leader who was serving in a certain department, was sent to Yunnan's frontline to participate in the counterattack against self-defense against Vietnam, along with 10 other comrades in the area. Among the eleven boys in the Bohai Sea who went to the battlefield, the young 22-year-old Zhou Yuenan was rated 26 years old and was the only one married. In a regiment serving as a soldier, several fellow villagers feel very much in love.

The cruelty of war is well known. A group of young people have no idea whether they can return safely. Before leaving, each person wrote a suicide note. They agreed that no matter who fell, the rest of the people must help to support his parents.

On February 11, 1985, during a battle for the high ground, Chen Yunsheng, a Bohai soldier, was ordered to open up a passage for the troops. Zhou Yuenan recalled that when Chen Yunsheng stepped out of the trenches, he detonated the surrounding mines with blasting pipes. How far did it take, a shell came and Chen Yunsheng died heroically when he was 24 years old.

In the face of comrade-in-arms sacrifices, Zhou Yuenan resisted grief and spent 187 days on the battlefield.

Among 11 comrades in Wenzhou Luanhai, except for Chen Yunsheng’s sacrifice, Yan Shangyi, Zhou Yuenan, Lin Jinming and others performed meritorious service. Zhou Yuenan said that when they put on the stage of flowers, the mood is so complicated: because the medals were exchanged for blood by their comrades.

In the winter of 1985, when Zhou Yuenan retired from his hometown, the first thing was about two comrades-in-arms. He went hiking for 3 hours to find Chen Yunsheng’s family. At the time, the two old people, Chen Zhouxing and Wen Shanyu, who were near to their families, lived in an old and shabby room.

"Although Yunsheng is gone, but we are still. In the future, we are all yours!" A group of comrades in the army believes Yunsheng's parents are "intimate mothers." When Lin Xiashan, Zhou Yuenan and others each sent 200 yuan to the elderly. When we talked about the past, Chen Ma was moved: “The 200 yuan now doesn't seem like anything, but it was the children’s intentions. At that time, the salary was only 30-40 yuan a month!”

Lifelong commitment

In the first few years, the two old people were in good health and worked together every day. Zhou Yuenan and several comrades-in-arms must go to the mountains before and after the "August 1st," and bring life items to the elderly.

Zhou Yuenan is very meticulous, always aware of what the elderly family lacks, and adds something. In the summer of 2004, Zhou Yuenan and 7 comrades bought summer supplies such as mats, mosquito nets and mosquito coils for the elderly, and sent a 21-inch color TV to enrich their old age.

In March 2008, 80-year-old Chen Yunsheng’s father, Chen Zhouxing, died. Zhou Yuenan took a three-day absence as a “dutiful son” to help with cooking. Zhou Yuenan persuaded Chen mother down several times and contacted a nursing home. However, Chen Mu is always in love, and she does not want to move down.

The house the elderly lived in was in disrepair and the housing estate leaked. Zhou Yuenan raised more than 30,000 yuan to build a two-story house.

In order to facilitate contact, Zhou Yuenan also bought a mobile phone for Chen He who lives alone in Sheshan. The old man will not use it. Zhou Yuenan will teach her how to answer it. He will play it once every few days and ask for warmth.

One day in 2009, Zhou Yuenan visited the mountains and saw Chen mother's hand swelled a big chunk. The old man shook his hand and said, "It's okay. Just a few days will be enough." Turning to Chen Mumu, when she was chopping wood, she slid the blade to the back of her hand and cut it three or four centimeters. Zhou Yuenan looked distressed, took out leather gloves from the car and let Chenmu wear it. The next day, he bought anti-inflammatory drugs, bandages, and ointment and sent them to the mountains.

Since then, Chen’s safety has caused Zhou Yuenan to worry. He called at least one phone call a week to ask for safety. In November last year, Zhou Yuenan called Chen mother and nobody answered. "No accident?" Zhou Yuenan worried, and immediately rushed to the mountains. When I saw Chen Mu cooking on the fireside, she discovered that she had made a false alarm. It turned out that the old man's cell phone was not on the side.

When we went down, Chen Mu would take eggs to Zhou Yuenan. "Leave yourself to eat!" Zhou Yuenan quickly drilled into the car. On the way back, Zhou Yuenan said: "Every time I leave, I see Mummy looking alone. I always feel sad. As long as I'm still alive, I'll take care of Yunsheng."

Zhou Yuenan's daughter's nickname is "Panpan," which was given to his comrades on the battlefield. On the battlefield, Zhou Yuenan received a family letter and learned that his pregnant wife had a daughter. Thus, Zhou Yuenan gave his wife more than 40 comrades to name his daughter. Zhou Yuenan likes "panpan" because there are two meanings: "Dad hopes to see her daughter soon, her daughter looks forward to her father returning soon."

The war is cruel, and the friendly friendship in the war is extremely deep. In that year, the movie "Assembly" touched many people. The movie describes such a friendship. He said: "When I watched this movie, tears did not stop and I was moved to the friendship of the comrades with whom I died."

Zhou Yuenan took care of his parents for the late comrade-in-arms, not only for a promise, but also for commemorating his comrades in action.
