New 3D printer is faster

The current process of manufacturing articles by a 3D printer is a layer of material that precipitates or solidifies each time. Although a very complicated article can be manufactured through this process, it is more time-consuming and costly to produce than a conventional machine manufacturing technology. The new 3D printing technology, developed jointly by North Carolina State University and researchers at the University of North Carolina, has some of the features of current 3D printer technology, but it can maintain the continuity of the material level during the manufacturing process. Make the manufacturing speed greatly accelerated.

The manufacturing principle of a 3D printer is similar to that of stereolithography, in that a laser is used to create a pattern in a liquid material that can be converted into a solid by light, and each layer of the article is produced. Usually after a layer has been created, the laser has to be switched off to allow more liquid material to spread out sufficiently to prepare for the next level. This process is not only very slow, but the "interactions" between the layers will leave marks on the manufactured items.

How to make the manufacturing process continuous, and to ensure that no traces remain between the different layers, the key is to modify the liquid material so that it does not cure immediately when exposed to light. The researchers used a thin layer of oxygen that allowed it to temporarily stop the liquid material from solidifying and to maintain continuity at the material level. The researchers said that this technology makes the manufacturing speed of 3D printers comparable to that of conventional manufacturing in many cases.

In the process of developing this technology, researchers used different types of commercially available plastics. At present, they are still trying to use other types of liquid materials in order to use mixed materials to create different items.

At present, researchers have published the technical principles of the 3D printer in the recently published "Science" magazine. The innovative company Carbon3D, which was established to apply and promote this technology, has received a financing of 41 million U.S. dollars.
