Mini-robots crawl like caterpillars

Soft robots are not easy because they need completely different components from their rigid robots. This is the more severe technique that they usually use for moving parts. A physics research group at the University of Warsaw successfully created a 15mm soft micromachine that needed only light to move. Micro-robots are liquid crystal elastomers (LCES) that change the shape of smart materials when exposed to visible light. Under the light source, the aircraft's body pushes it forward like a caterpillar.


Researchers say that robots can climb steep slopes, squeeze into tiny spaces and move objects that are ten times their size. A tiny machine can run in a challenging environment and can be used for scientific research or even espionage if someone can find a way to connect a camera or microphone. However, if the robot is a bit too small in a particular prototype, researchers can also use a team approach to combine several soft machines to work together.
