Hydrogen fuel cell power system concept

As part of a variety of energy power solutions strategies, FPT Industrial is working to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology. It is the result of the latest R&D projects and may result in new zero-emission solutions designed for heavy-duty transportation in the future for long-haul shipments and long-haul/intercity passenger transport. The hydrogen fuel cell is a new technology with high energy density capability, with modular design and excellent environmental certification (storage tank to wheel, all based on the use of H2, basically equal to zero emissions). H2 may also be a key factor in the development of a circular economy when hydrogen is produced locally through renewable energy, biomethane or wind or solar energy. The FPT Industrial R&D project aims to research, test and overcome difficulties, making H2 a “mission-driven” zero-emissions provider that meets all “high-energy applications” that require high performance, efficiency and efficiency under high loads. reliability. From carbon fiber high-resistance tanks, hydrogen flows into fuel cells to generate electricity, powering a 400-kilowatt electric engine. This combination of electric and fuel cells enables a zero-emission vehicle that recognizes hydrogen as a natural evolution of natural gas for long-haul applications requiring zero NOx, zero PM and zero CO2.

Efficient natural gas: CURSOR 13 HI-ENG

The goal of the Hi-eNG project is to develop a highly innovative low pressure direct injection, positive ignition system for the next generation of heavy duty natural gas engines. Compared with the benchmark engine, the brake thermal efficiency is improved, the greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, and the Hi-eNG torque and rated power are both increased by 10%.

The special development process of the Cursor 13 NG engine, hardware selection and optimization is supported by the most powerful simulation tools, as well as testing and calibration of single-cylinder engines. The engine has a specific cylinder head with a combustion chamber with a turbulent air inlet designed for optimum positive ignition combustion. Low pressure (up to 50 bar) gas fuel direct injection systems also offer many advantages, such as higher specific engine power output and better and more flexible fuel mixture control to reduce overall pollutant emissions during transient operation, Significant contributions have been made to improving fuel economy. High-pressure cooling of the EGR circuit helps reduce throttling losses at partial load, while variable valve timing uses cam phase technology to achieve optimal phase adjustment conditions and optimum volumetric efficiency and turbulence levels. Finally, the corona ignition system ensures optimum mixed ignition and high EGR rates. All of these new components are integrated through FPT industry-specific control system strategies.

Hybrid natural gas efficient project: GASTone

For the past four years, FPT Industrial has been involved in the GASTone project, which is funded by the European Commission. The GASTone project is an efficient energy conversion concept based on the integration of energy recovery devices, energy storage and electrification of engine auxiliary equipment for the FPT Cursor gas Euro VI engine for road vehicles.

The energy recovery strategy is based on two main streams:

Recover kinetic energy with a belt driven smart generator (BSG)

Energy cascades are used to recover waste heat, thermoelectric generators (TEG) operating in high temperature environments and accompanying turbine generators (TBG).

The FPT Industrial Cursor NG Euro VI engine integrates:

- catalyst downstream of TEG

-TBG downstream TEG

-BSG, replacing the existing alternator

-DC/DC converter manages three voltage values ​​(12V, 24V, 48V)

- Double layer capacitors for storing the generated energy

- Water pump and low temperature circulation for correcting cooling electronics

Therefore, FPT Industrial's main task is to mechanically integrate and install all prototype components on the engine, as well as control systems for electronic device management. In addition, test bed activities were conducted at the FPT Industrial R&D facility to verify the expected benefits of the new technologies used, including fuel consumption, greenhouse gas reductions and improved engine efficiency.

Single cylinder high engine efficiency

FPT Industrial will focus on basic research to achieve a 50% brake thermal efficiency of diesel engines. By combining highly advanced research tools with virtual simulations and engine testing, combustion efficiency is being addressed as a major area of ​​improvement.

A detailed study of the identified areas using three main tools to achieve thermal efficiency goals:

Incendiary-constant bombs for basic research and simulation calibration allow for in-depth study of flame structure and flame wall interactions. The results were used as inputs to build the next generation combustion simulation model.

Combustion Simulation for Virtual Combustion Development - Study different combustion configurations (compression ratio, injection mode, piston skirt shape) and preload simulation activities to reduce engine test times.

Single cylinder engine for combustion verification - single cylinder engine for actual combustion verification. Research topics include air handling, fuel injection, combustion and multiple fuels. The modularity of a single cylinder engine allows for faster changes to combustion related components.
