Cummins has further expanded its newly developed Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine, which will be the first Cummins heavy-duty natural gas engine to land on the North American market. This product, which uses compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas as a single fuel, is currently in the final road test stage and is expected to be put into operation at Cummins' Jamestown plant in the early part of 2013. It will be used for dump trucks, tractors, heavy trucks and tractors, and pickup trucks. Heavy-duty freight vehicles, such as sanitation vehicles and postal vehicles, will be extended to the passenger and coach markets such as coaches and school buses.
The ISX12 G uses the same basic platform as the Cummins ISX 12-liter diesel engine, as well as the patented Cummins Westgate ignition combustion combined with stoichiometric cooled exhaust gas recirculation (SEGR) on the ISL G 8.9-liter natural gas engine. The Cummins ISX12 G natural gas engine adopts a three-way catalytic aftertreatment device, which is compact in structure, packaged into a silencer mode, and maintenance-free to meet the emission standards required by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Nitrogen Oxide 0.2 g/hp hour and particulate matter 0.01 g/hp hour are the emission limits. The product will also meet Euro VI standards and the upcoming US greenhouse gas emission and fuel consumption standards in the future. To encourage the development of the latest clean-burning power products, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the California Energy Commission Gas Technology Research Institute also provided some special financial support for the development of Cummins ISX12 G.
